EAN-13 is the International Article Number, the barcode on virtually every retail product sold outside North America and on most sold inside it too. Its thirteen digits break into three parts: a two- or three-digit GS1 prefix identifying the numbering organisation that issued the number, a manufacturer and product reference, and a final check digit computed with a modulo-10 weighted sum. A detail worth knowing is that the prefix identifies where the number was registered, not where the goods were made — a 50 prefix means the company registered with GS1 UK, not that the item was manufactured in Britain. Another quirk: the thirteenth digit is not drawn as bars at all. It is encoded implicitly in the odd/even parity pattern of the six left-hand digits, which is how a scanner can read the symbol from either direction and still recover the full number.

To sell through retailers, yes — a GTIN must be licensed from GS1 so it is globally unique to your product. This tool draws the barcode symbol for a number you already own; it does not allocate numbers.
It identifies the GS1 member organisation that issued the number, not the country of manufacture. A product made in one country can legitimately carry a prefix registered in another.
The final digit is a modulo-10 checksum derived from the first twelve. Adding it automatically prevents the single most common cause of a barcode that will not scan at the till.
They are close relatives. UPC-A is twelve digits and used in the US and Canada; EAN-13 is its thirteen-digit international superset. A UPC-A number is simply an EAN-13 with a leading zero, and modern retail scanners read both.
The nominal EAN-13 size is 37.29 mm wide by 25.93 mm tall. Retailers generally accept 80 to 200 percent of that, but never stretch it non-proportionally and always keep the light margins on both sides.
