PDF417 stands for Portable Data File, and the 417 describes its building block: every codeword is 17 modules wide, made of four bars and four spaces. That stacked structure is why it looks like a squashed ladder rather than a square, and why a laser line scanner can read it at all — a genuine advantage over QR in places where handheld laser guns are still standard issue. One symbol holds roughly 1,850 alphanumeric characters or 1,100 raw bytes, enough for a full name, address, date of birth, licence class and portrait hash, which is exactly what the AAMVA standard packs onto the back of North American driver's licences. No. PDF417 is a stacked linear code — rows of bars — while QR is a true square matrix. PDF417 holds more text and can be read by laser scanners; QR is faster to scan with a phone camera and tolerates more damage.
