MSI, often called MSI Plessey, is a numeric-only symbology that MSI Data Corporation derived from the earlier Plessey Code, and it survives today in one specific niche: retail shelf labelling. It is the barcode on the price rail beneath the products rather than on the products themselves. Staff walking the aisles with a handheld scanner read shelf tags to count facings, trigger replenishment and reprice, and MSI is what those tags carry in a great many chains. The symbology accepts any number of digits, has no built-in checksum, and offers optional modulo-10 or modulo-11 check digits that the application layer chooses. That flexibility is precisely why it stays inside closed inventory systems and never appears on consumer packaging — with no mandatory check character and no standards body governing its use, it is unsuitable for data that crosses between companies.
