400×400 is the workhorse avatar size: large enough to stay clean on a modern display, small enough that forums, chat tools and account systems accept it without complaint. Because avatars are almost always displayed as circles, the corners of your square will be cut off by the platform itself — so keep the face or logo comfortably inside the middle and leave a little breathing room at the edges. Fill mode crops your photo to a centred square, which is usually what you want for a headshot. Fit shrinks the whole image onto a background colour, which suits a logo or wordmark that must not lose any part of itself. Preview before downloading to confirm nothing important sits where the circular mask will land.
