GIF is a format from 1987 and it shows: a hard limit of 256 colours per frame, plus transparency that is binary rather than graduated — a pixel is either fully opaque or fully invisible, which is what produces those jagged halos around GIF logos. PNG lifts both restrictions, storing up to 16 million colours and a smooth 8-bit alpha channel, all losslessly. For any still image this makes PNG strictly better, and it usually compresses smaller too. The one thing PNG does not do is animation, so an animated GIF converts to a single still frame here; for animation, keep the GIF or move to WebP or MP4. For logos, icons, diagrams and screenshots, PNG is the correct destination.
