Every time a JPG is opened, edited and saved again it is re-compressed, and the artifacts compound — edges get mushy, flat skies pick up blocky patches. Converting to PNG stops that cycle: PNG is lossless, so the file you save today is pixel-identical to the file you open next year, no matter how many times it passes through an editor. This is the right move before retouching, before layering a JPG into a design, and whenever a tool or platform specifically demands PNG. Be aware the file will get larger — often three to five times — because PNG is not discarding anything. It also cannot recover detail the original JPG already destroyed; it simply prevents further loss from this point forward.
