WebP's lossy mode was designed as a direct replacement for JPG and generally reaches the same perceived quality using about 25–35% fewer bytes. On a page carrying twenty product photographs that is a meaningful cut to Largest Contentful Paint, and LCP is the Core Web Vital most sites fail. The conversion is straightforward because neither format stores transparency, so there is nothing to flatten or lose. One caution worth knowing: you are re-encoding already-lossy data, so push the quality slider higher than you would when encoding from an original — 85–90 keeps the result clean, while dropping to 60 stacks new artifacts on top of the JPG's existing ones. Convert from the highest-quality source you have whenever possible.
