1024×768 is XGA, the resolution that dominated projectors and business laptops for years and still turns up wherever hardware has a long service life: meeting-room projectors, digital kiosks, industrial panels, older tablets and plenty of embedded displays. If a slide or a signage image will be shown on equipment you do not control, XGA is the safe assumption. Like 800×600 it is a 4:3 frame, so widescreen sources lose their sides in fill mode. For presentation backgrounds fit is often the better choice, because padding with a colour that matches the slide template looks deliberate while a hard crop can decapitate a diagram. Being a modest resolution, the exported file stays small enough to load instantly from a USB stick or a slow network share.
