800×600 is a 4:3 frame that predates widescreen displays, and it survives because so many systems standardised on it: school and government upload forms, older content-management systems, e-learning platforms and internal tools frequently cap images at this size. It is also a practical choice when a page needs an illustration that loads instantly on a slow connection. Modern phone photos are far larger, so this is nearly always a downscale, which keeps the result crisp. Photos shot in 3:2 or 16:9 are wider than 4:3, so fill will trim their sides; fit preserves the full frame and pads instead. If a form rejects your file for being too big, lowering the quality slider usually solves it without changing the dimensions.
