China is the one country on this list with TWO photo specifications for the same application, and they are not the same shape. The printed photo is 33 mm wide by 48 mm high — taller and narrower than the 35×45 mm most countries use, so a European-size photo cannot simply be trimmed to fit. The online visa application form then asks for an uploaded JPEG that may be no larger than 354×472 pixels and must weigh between 40 and 120 KB: a 3:4 frame, wider in proportion than the print. A scan of the print does not meet the upload rule, and the upload does not replace the print. This page covers the visa photo a foreign applicant needs; a Chinese citizen's own passport is a different application.
48 mm high × 33 mm wide, as published by Embassy of the People's Republic of China (consular notice on visa photos, in force from 1 December 2016). This page crops to exactly that, at 300 DPI (390×567 pixels).
Width of head 15–22 mm; height of head 28–33 mm, with the head centred in the photo.
JPEG only, no larger than 354 × 472 pixels, file size 40–120 KB; taken within the past 6 months on a white or near-white background. That is a different frame from the print, so this tool offers it as a separate size (354 × 472 px JPEG — online form). Source: Chinese Visa Application Service Center.
White or close to white, with no edge frame. This tool crops and sizes the photo; it does not replace the background — the background remover does that.
No. The crop runs in your browser, so a photo destined for an identity document never leaves your device.
It gives you the published size. Acceptance also depends on expression, glasses, head coverings, lighting, print quality and how recent the photo is — rules Embassy of the People's Republic of China (consular notice on visa photos, in force from 1 December 2016) sets and can change.
